About this site
Hi there, @FrauCloud here!
I love road trips! Sadly it's gotten more difficult lately to hit the road. But I live vicariously through YouTubers who travel the country and bring us fun footage!
I also love software development, so I figured I want to plot the videos on a map. This site is meant for you if you are...
- ... scoping out destinations for your next roadtrip π
- ... looking for attractions along a planned route, to see what is worth a detour πΊοΈ
- ... thinking of relocating, and wanting to get a feel for different areas π
- ... planning a weekend getaway ποΈ
- ... generating ideas for an activity date π or an afternoon with the family πͺ
- ... and of course. anyone looking for fun new channels to follow! π₯°
FAQ
Which channels are included?
At first I added my favorite roadtrip channels; then I searched for some more and added those. I do plan to continually extend the selection of channels, though I still have a big backlog for videos to add of the existing channel list.
Note: I mainly focus on channels where creators record themselves discovering new areas and narrate as they go, for that true "road trip" feel.
How did you determine the locations for the videos?
In some cases I was able to just to by city or town names in the title. But for the most part I used special video annotation software that I wrote myself to manually go through videos and tag locations.
E.g. "The Daily Woo" usually visits several locations in a single travel video, and I try to tag some or most of them, so they show up on the map with direct links to the respective timestamps in the video.
What is the difference between the red and orange markers?
The red markers are where I tagged a video spot with an exact latitude/longitude. The orange markers are "rough" markers where I could only determine that a video was from "somewhere around there."
Some videos/locations are missing, or inaccurate!
I'm still in the process of tagging more videos and locations. If you want to see more of a particular channel, I recommend you join my
Patreon page and let me know your favorites. I will do my best to get them included soon!
As far as accuracy, getting locations for the videos is not an exact process (see above), and sometimes it takes some detective work to determine where a video was taken. I'm working on a feature where users can flag inaccurate tags.
My YouTube channel also features U.S. travel videos! How do I get them included?
Right now I'm still busy cataloging the channels I have on here (and this is just a side project of mine!). If you're a
Patreon supporter, feel free to contact me on that site.
If you are able to send me a spreadsheet with the video link, video timestamp, location lat/lon, and location description (e.g. "World's Largest Firehydrant"), I can probably add those super fast π€ But please reach out to me first.
I reserve the right not to include a channel, e.g. if it features excessive/loud background music, stock footage, drone footage, or a ton of jump cuts. Though I sometimes make exceptions if the featured locations are not well-covered by other channels.
In general, if you have a travel vlog, I recommend saving the locations you visited for future reference. This can be as easy as taking some still photos at the location of each scene, with the "location" feature turned on. Later you can get the latitude/longitude from the pictures' EXIF info. (Exporting/saving your phone's location history can be helpful as well.)
Supporting this site
If you enjoy this site, I would love for you to join my
Patreon! I plan to do additional fun stuff once I have a good number of subscribers, including live streams where we chat about places we've been to, explore videos featured on the website, and do some tagging work together.
I also plan to add premium features to this site, including searching video content by keywords. Patreon supporters will be zoom in more closely on cities and thus retrieve more videos in tightly clustered areas. (This feature will go live soon!) So, join my
Patreon and you'll stay "in the know." π
